Predefined printer settings are initially installed, enabling you to print immediately. For example, they define such settings as the paper size and page orientation. Instructions for printing a document can vary somewhat for different Windows applications. Therefore, for detailed instructions, see the user documentation for the specific application from which you are printing. The following instructions summarize the general procedures for printing a document. I To print a document 1 With your document open, click the command to print your document. (In most Windows applications, the Print command is on the File menu or toolbar. ) 2 In the Print dialog box, make sure the printer is selected under Printer (Windows 98/Me) or Select Printer (Windows 2000/XP). 3 Click the command to print your document (usually OK or Print). Chapter 7 Installing Printer Driver 7-3 Installing Printer Driver Defining Print Settings: an Overview Print settings determine how your document looks when it is printed. Although predefined print settings are initially installed with the software, you may want to change these settings for certain documents. Print settings can be changed to suit the type of document you are printing. For example, if you regularly print draft copies of reports, you can define print settings to suit your printing requirements. When CHANGE CARTRIDGE appears in the LCD, you may need to replace the cartridge. However, it may also indicate that the toner inside the cartridge is simply unevenly distributed. Before replacing the cartridge, follow this procedure to distribute the toner evenly: 1 Remove the cartridge from the machine (1 steps 1 to 4, below). 2 Gently rock the cartridge from side to side a few times to distribute the toner evenly inside it. · Poor print quality may result if the toner is unequally distributed. 3 Reinsert the cartridge into the machine (1 steps 8 and 9, p. 8-9). If after following the procedure above, CHANGE CARTRIDGE remains in the LCD or print quality does not improve, follow this procedure to replace the cartridge: 1 Remove any documents and printouts from the machine. 3 Lift the latch and open the front cover. c Do not try to open the front cover without lifting the latch since this may damage your machine. Chapter 8 Maintenance 8-7 Maintenance Replacing the FX-3 Cartridge 4 Hold the cartridge by its handle and remove it from the machine. · Discard the old cartridge immediately according to the local laws and regulations for disposal of consumables. To recycle your used cartridge, simply follow the instructions included with your new FX-3 cartridge. HANDLE 5 Remove the new FX-3 cartridge from its protective bag. · Save the protective bag in case you need to repack the cartridge at a later date. 6 Gently rock the cartridge from side to side a few times to distribute the toner evenly inside it. · Poor print quality may result if the toner is unequally distributed. 7 Place and support the cartridge on a flat, clean surface, then gently pull on the plastic tab to remove the plastic seal. · Use a firm, even pull to avoid breaking the seal. Follow this procedure to clear the document jam: n You do not need to unplug your machine when clearing document jams. 1 Press Stop/Reset. 2 Use both hands to gently open the operation panel. · It only opens partially. · Do not try to pull the document out without opening the operation panel since you may tear or smudge the document. 3 While holding the operation panel open, remove the document. · Pull it gently in either direction. · If a multipage document is loaded, remove the entire document from the ADF. n If the paper does not pull out easily, do not force it. Contact the Canon Customer Care Center. 4 When you are finished, close the operation panel by pressing it down from the center. · Be sure to close the operation panel until it locks into place, or the machine will not function properly. 9-2 Troubleshooting Chapter 9 Paper Jams When paper jams in the machine, the LCD displays CLEAR PAPER JAM.
